The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” – Luke 1:28
This greeting troubled Mary according to scripture. It would trouble most of us. First, it was spoken to hear by a visible angel, that is troubling enough on its own. Second, the words themselves don’t fit. Mary was a teen girl from a poor family in an insignificant town in a society where women were second class at best. On top of that she had been taught to be afraid of God by her religion and practices.
The idea that she was highly favored did not make sense. Yet, she was.
She was favored because had chosen her. She was favored because God had created her. She was favored because she had a God-ordained purpose. The same is true for you.
You are favored by God because you are fearfully and wonderfully made in His image. You are favored because He has called and ordained you for a purpose that is greater than you are. You are highly favored of God. This, not because of what you have done or because you are that good, but because of His grace and His love for you. You are favored of God because He has chosen you.
